In this environment, children and teens need to develop strengths, acquire skills to cope, recover from hardships, and be prepared for future challenges and opportunities. They need to be resilient in order to succeed in life. Brain science demonstrates that a child’s brain goes through major growth all the way until their mid-twenties. This ability of the brain to change is called neuroplasticity and the way a child’s brain develops depends to a great degree on what the child experiences day to day. When the adult in the child’s life offers him or her an environment in which they are taught to manage their anxiety and focus their attention, this gives the child a spring base from which they can then venture off to new ground, learn new things, and expose themselves to new situations without fear. When children do not know how to calm themselves and focus their mind, less attention is available to them for learning, creativity, problem solving and exploring new ideas.

OUR MISSION

To develop resilience in inner city children so they can successfully meet the challenges and opportunities presented to them in life.

OVERVIEW

Glowmundo teaches inner city children, mechanisms that reduce the body stress reaction. By assisting them in managing their thoughts, emotions and body responses, children learn a natural, drug-free way to relax, rise above circumstances and restore their natural state of well being. This leaves room for them to focus on learning, developing their unique talents and nurturing their innate characteristics.

Today’s families, and especially our children, are under tremendous stress with the potential to affect negatively both their physical health and psychological well-being. Common stressors these children face are family financial struggles, parental unemployment, family and community violence, cultural and language barriers, homelessness, among others.  Children experiencing these difficulties, tend to enter school unprepared cognitively and emotionally to learn. As a result, teachers and parents often mistake unmanaged stress symptoms with intentional misbehavior which sometimes is treated with medicines s and labels as a way to deal with their child stress.
At Glowmundo, we recognize that children come onto this world with innate characteristics such as creativity, intuition and compassion along with unique talents that they apply in their journey of learning and discovery during their preschool and kindergarten years. Through the course of their childhood, they often get messages, spoken and non-spoken, that do not honor this inner life and slowly they start suppressing those innate abilities.

The child’s mind draws conclusions about any events, comments, attitudes, etc., that he or she faces day in and day out.  When those are negative, they generate strong emotions in them, which then trigger the body stress reaction. These unresolved negative emotions, if not deal with
Studies show that the most common stress-coping strategies for youth today are playing sports or staying active by listening to music, TV watching or video game playing. Those coping strategies work in the moment to bring down stress but they do not assist with processing the negative emotions brought up by experiences that trigger the stress reaction. Slowly, stress accumulates in the child’s body and we start seeing self destructive behaviors such as over-eating, under-eating, dropping out of school, withdrawal, aggressiveness, depression, violence, illegal substances and drug abuse, among others. If not addressed at an early stage, the negative beliefs they create about themselves and their world (“I can’t do that,” " I am not athletic," “It’s difficult to be in this world,” “My parents hate me and prefer my sister”), can be carried on into the teenage and adult years, affecting their behavior, relationships, and outlook in life.
by going within, start accumulating and building negative beliefs (neural nets in their brain) about themselves and the world around. Thus leading in the end to poor choice making.
